The Maud May Babcock Doctoral Writing Society is an interdisciplinary group of PhD students in the Communication and Rhetoric and Composition programs at the University of Utah.
Our namesake is Maud May Babcock, a groundbreaking educator and scholar at the University of Utah. She was the first female faculty member at our university, the founder of our Communication Department, and one of the first female presidents of what would later become the National Communication Association. We draw inspiration from her achievements and strive to live up to her name.
Our writing group exchanges works in progress regularly throughout the semester to provide one another with comments and encouragement. We also hold two annual writing retreats dedicated to the difficult task of carving out time and space for graduate students to focus on writing.
